Chapter Sixteen

The house was deafeningly quiet. I cleaned up, and then took a shower. After getting dressed, I glanced down at the bassinet, the pink blanket bunched into a ball. I picked it up and held it up to my face. Sullivan’s fresh scent drifted from it.

My heart ached.

The silence strangled me.

Why had you been so quick to leave? Didn’t you like it at my house? I knew Sullivan did. He was happy here. Content. Safe. It was selfish of you to take him back to that dingy backyard apartment.

I’d offered you a home. A nice one at that. Safety. A helper. Why hadn’t you taken me up on it? Honestly, it made no sense.

It was almost winter. That place you lived in was a dump. I think it had been a garage before. Who knew if it even had proper heating?

Babies needed warmth.

There was clearly no way to convince you to stay here. You were desperate to leave.

Damn you, Kelly.

Why were you making this so difficult?

Biting my lip, I dropped the blanket back into the bassinet. I couldn’t sit around all day in this big, empty house. I needed to do everything in my power to make sure Sullivan was safe.

Before leaving my room, I glanced back one last time at the bassinet. There was no reason to put it away. It would be needed again.
